Friday, a day of general mourning thoughts.

Laziness is a sleep deprived means of starting my day. It's nearly ten, and I'm just brewing my first pot of the day. Hopefully, I don't burn myself eating a poptart.
Anyway, my grandpa J would have been 96 today if he hadn't passed back when he was 75. 21 years ago, today was a Sunday and I had the title of elder bestowed upon my being.
Church leaders needed me to fill a seat that was problematic to do so without me due to bylaws. I was to serve a year on the active session, but deaths made my election to another such term necessary.
It was a chaotic time, which impacted my current lack of church attendance.
Certain things I miss, but I know that things end for a reason; each day is a fresh start.

why bleach

Anyone from my dorm days could say a number of things about me, and I doubt I could argue. I don't remember stuff beyond conversations with a few people, but the smell of bleach always makes me think of how easy my co-op job was.
I cleaned the bathroom for my floor during most of my two years in the dorm. As part of the reduced boarding rate, everyone there worked in some capacity 5-8 hours a week, supposedly. I never had a scheduled job, so I didn't work by the hour like the office and cafeteria people did. All I had to do was make sure the stuff I had to clean was done before 9pm, and I didn't have a supervisor to make sure my job was done well or done at all.
I had the cleanest bathroom in the whole dorm, I was told by countless people.
See, I was probably the only person that even tried to clean daily. I may have worked an average of 15 minutes a day, but they were efficient minutes. 4 toilets, 4 sinks, and 4 shower stalls stay clean if you are not afraid to use bleach, otherwise mold and such take over very quickly.
I'm essentially doing the same job I had in the dorm, but I clean a carwash. I hate cleaning my house and other things, but I don't mind cleaning for other people willing to pay me. My standards are higher than most, so when I do a meh job by my standards, I get praise. Meh isn't my standard for home and I can't clean to my standard so I just assume not clean, most of the time.
I'm having a good day, thus far. I need to clean though.

age of indifference

Warhol once said, "Being born is like being kidnapped. And then sold into slavery." Horrible, I know, but there's something to his silliness. Andy hated growing up in Pittsburgh, for he had dreams of movie stars and all things cinema. Pittsburgh was drab during the Great Depression, but it was a city with a blue collar essence.

Did I spell "cinema" correctly?   Just occurred me that it looks a lot like "enema." Hmmm... I guess a crappy film genre could be deemed "sin-enema."

When I write enough, I start to think about the words as they string together. I don't so much type them, but they merge from nowhere as the words cascade in front of my eyes, flowing from my fingertips.

I've been mostly devoid of influence post-20th century. I've been rather indifferent aside from when I feel my freedoms are being eroded. Freedom is an illusion in a democracy when we have a mob mentality which stifles unpopular thoughts and expressions against the supposed opinion of the majority. Fascism rose as fashionable through effective propaganda and providing fuel to the mob's contentment in their thought process (hey, he who won't be named WAS elected by a popular vote, Vonnegut used to point out quite a bit his later years of senility). I will refrain from going further since my opinions are not popular from what I see most places, and the term "hater" exists for a reason. Meh.

Anyways, being born, one has little freedom to do much but wait and go with the flow until the time comes where bolting is permitted without reprisal. My life currently is dictated by the needs of my family, like my having to go pick up K from his field trip at 1:30. I am on cruise control in the sense that I need not think most of the time. Worrying is just silly when I am but one cog in a five person family unit.

Friended a handful of friends from my former life recently. I sent messages to some after being accepted. Finally heard from one today after a week or so. I guess writing snail mail is dead but responses to my "instant" mail is mostly just as slow, aside from my favorite people, of course.

I need a smart phone to keep up with some.

Anyways:

Friend was writing a novel that borrowed upon my personality for one of its characters. Book project has been shelved due to too much being cliche.

Mehnyways, time has diminished our exchanging words.

End of XP support

Well, the day has come that I will cease to use a certain machine for blogging. Not sure what will replace it, but a tablet will probably be what it will be given my annoyance with MICROSOFT. Seeing that my internet has been slow and Cincinnati Bell has been no help, I am looking into new connectivity options as well.

Just as I'm in a good place with my contact with the outside world, I'm being forced to be reclusive at my peak times of social productivity. Meh. Guess it must be a sign that I should be prioritizing other matters, like my beautiful 3 month old daughter.

Maybe I need to start being more physically active and eating better until I have the means to fully embrace mindless elements of my various interests?

Pictures

I was looking through pictures to see if I had an idea of when I got the Pumas that were recently replaced. I looked through a lot of pictures and there are few which show my feet. Earliest I can pinpoint was during a trip to Pittsburgh in July '10. My shoes were at least three years old when they were retired to lawnmowing duties.

It's odd looking at pictures of things that change over time. K and B have grown so much and have grown through so many shirts and dresses. Hard to think of time passing quickly, but my clothes that got holes live in those pictures. I am actually smiling in a bit of those pics. Usually I'm holding a little K or B. Hard not to be happy when with them, for they are always busy.

B wasn't happy with me Tuesday when we left the park. She wanted to stay. She fought me as I carried her. She's big enough to put up a fight. Hard to think that I'm going to be a father again. Something about babies makes me feel hopeful. Babies are full of love in the simplest form, at least the ones I have been around.

364 days later

Today marks the last day of the year that has been ramblings and meanderings here. I remember 4/18/12 like yesterday. I was unhappy. Not as annoyed as I most recently was with Menards.
A number of uneventful things have occurred, but yet I can vividly recall such inane moments in time. Perhaps I shall revisit those stale posts and fix them into a certain standardization, if I feel inclined to do such things. The first 50 or so things were written in a manner to add original contact to get approval for an Adsense account. Probably won't since my spacial sense of time has gotten out of whack.

I woke up yesterday morning thinking it was Saturday.

I need to focus on the things that are important and to make them my priority. TV isn't going anywhere as I tell K with regards to DVDs and Netflix, same can be said for the clutternet.

New Year's resolutions should be season dependent and flexible throughout the year, even though they boil down to being the same vague notions that seem unobtainable to the likes of me. I just have to raise the bar and focus on the tasks and forget about the big picture like Mathew Scudder's AA meetings have taught me.

Andy Warhol

26 years ago today, Andy Warhol died. He was 58. I didn't know much about him until going to his museum in Pittsburgh the day before I flew to Mérida, Mexico. I didn't really care for art until then. I like the clean simplicity. Didn't know who the Velvet Underground was either.  Of course I knew who Lou Reed was, but I had no idea he was ever in a band. Didn't know a lot of things, but I have read a number of books about Warhol, and I can safely say he was an interesting person that was before his time. Can you imagine him if he were alive today?

Barns

We have a shed that's shaped like a barn, so I call it a barn.  It's a rather large shed considering we live in a city, but it's only 160 square feet on the main floor. The loft theoretically could double the floor space.
Regardless, there's plenty of room for my stand behind lawnmower. I tend to put stuff in there that has moved from the basement and the garage, but for the most part it's outdoors stuff for kids. It's too cold and too hot through the year to be good for practical storage. Would be nice to have electricity out there, but I would be tempted to have A/C and heat out there as well. Going back to my days of sharing a room with an older sibling, I've had many daydreams of having a space to call my own. Silly to have such thoughts as an adult with a house, but the thoughts linger.
We cleaned out the barn yesterday, and I got those crazy thoughts about how it would be cool to make the shed into a mini-house. It's not practical to run electricity and plumbing, but add insulation, paneling and incorporate camping technology in lieu of standard plumbing and electricity...
In all seriousness, I know it's silly to think of such things as being viable as permanent living arrangement given the unnecessary self-imposed burdens in addition to the fact that nothing is gained by the experience, but there are a lot of masochists out there that enjoy misery.

Mr. Mom

While I was waiting to drop off B at preschool, my brother called to wish me a happy birthday.

Normally, I don't answer his calls, but I figure I'd be best to do so as to not have to bear another anytime soon. He referenced Mr. Mom. I hadn't seen the film in twenty plus years so I didn't catch his meaning.

Watched the film on Netflix the other night, and I found myself more annoyed than I'd like.

I like Michael Keaton, but I find it hard to believe that the movie showed on the "big screen" once upon a time, but I feel that way about a lot of things associated with John Hughes.

Speaking of John Hughes, he's been dead three years.

When did Clint Eastwood decide to channel Jimmy Stewart?

When we got Netflix, I got lots of movies that I haven't seen in a while that I'd never expect J to watch, so I never thought of them until lately. Anyways, I watched Dirty Harry for the first time without it being edited for TV. Strange how often films from the 70s had incidental T & A. The film is essentially the same contextually without vulgarity and nudity as long as the line "Go ahead, make my day" is said.

I've always liked Clint Eastwood. I like his spaghetti westerns for they have a timeless quality to them. He's got a quiet anger about him, yet he's funny when he needs to be. Can't think of any comedies off the top of my head, which makes tonight's appearance at the RNC seem a bit odd. Reminded me a lot of Jimmy Stewart in Harvey, which I thought was an odd movie for Jimmy Stewart when you consider his films with Hitchcock and Capra.

I must be getting old for it seems like yesterday Jimmy Stewart passed away, yet Jimmy Stewart has been gone for 15 years.  I thought he was old at 89, and that he had a full life. 89 doesn't seem that old to me now.

Clint Eastwood still makes movies and is 82.  He seemed a bit awkward talking to an empty chair, but I think he got his point across without the need of editing.

Inbox purge galore

I have had a couple dozen or so e-mail accounts over the years. I use quite a few regularly. 1) I have my original school address from '96 that I was allowed to keep upon graduation as a gift, but can't use as my primary address. 2) I have my original yahoo account which I set up in '97. 3) I have a iwon.com account that I set up in hopes of winning something back when that domain existed as a search hub that I now use as a spam account. 4) I have my graduate school address, that I use when I want to seem less anonymous. 5) I have my ISP address. 6) I have a gmail account. 7) I have a "work" email as well.

I could have soooo many twitter accounts, but why would I do that? Back when I was young and full of ideas, I thought it would cool to create interactive extrapolations of characters to a book I was writing to give a ready made audience upon its publication. I developed the idea before social media boomed when things like collegeclub.com existed. The idea fizzled when I had other things that were prioritized thus left to be never followed though since it was tedious and ill fated given that I was basically spamming acquaintances with assumed names in hopes of getting a conversation going through those infamous forwards that you tell something about yourself and pass along like a chain letter. Not sure if trolls existed then, but it was of that same nature of antagonizing banter to generate a persona based on semi-fictional reactions. I needed dialogue and lacked a sense of character depth to think originally. Blogs didn't exist then, since Livejournal.com and Diaryland.com were years away to be able to appropriate others' thoughts. Very tedious endeavor it was.

Do chain letters still exist?

Anyways, I have a lot of email accounts that I use daily for things, when I could get by with just one since I forward most of my mail to one account. I have my accounts set up to forward copies, so that I have full inboxes when I only rely upon one account for any extended period of time. I cleaned out several thousand email from a few account yesterday. I wonder how long it will be before they are cluttered again.

Way back machine

There was a time that I had way too much free time and created a webpage that attempted to collect the random sites that were dedicated to Kurt Vonnegut.
Funny how  I wouldn't do it that way now seeing that I understand copyright better. Found the old page on http://web.archive.org/ and I had to laugh since it says I had about 25K visitors since 2002! I no way recall it being visited that often, but what do I know?
I think Geocities.com went out of existence in 2009, so the sitemeter is stuck at 24,865.

What's the point of college football?

The whole Paterno matter at Penn State begs the question, why is college football so sacred?

Covering up CHILD RAPE is accessory to CHILD RAPE, as far as I'm concerned.

Jerry Sandusky is a monster, just based on the accounts that we know occurred, but I would be shocked if there weren't more victims we will never hear mentioned now that the scum is set to rot in prison.

Joe Paterno surely knew something about Jerry Sandusky being a creap back in 1998, as was indicated earlier today. An argument could be made that JoePa didn't think that those relationships were "rape-rape," but only a Penn Stater would make such claim, right?

"Penn State" sounded like a prison moniker to me when I was a kid. Sounded fake. I didn't know what a "nittany lion" was until I googled it moments ago. Sounds fake.

Anyways, the point of all of the covering up of Jerry Sandusky by the legendary College Football Coach was to protect the good name of the program?

It is a state school. What did the cover-up teach us?

It taught us that football is more important than children to some very sick individuals.

Shame on you! They were children, and football is just a game.*

*Games don't matter, for they are merely to pass time without having to deal with the mundane of daily life.

I like football, but I don't say "we" with reference to the teams I follow. My college roommate used to say "we" all the time with regards to John Cooper's Buckeyes. I know about football being sacred for said roommate was the "Crazy Bearded Guy" that added an extra quarter before graduating to be able to get another season of student tickets.

I haven't talked to that roommate since 12/27/03 when we were at the reception of another roommate's wedding here in Dayton. He could be dead, I've not seen him on Facebook or Twitter, hence I mention him here, for the person he knew me as is no more.

She's one of a growing number of seniors joining Facebook to connect with grandchildren and former pals. Now, classes that teach the basics of Facebook are popping up.

I'm a 33, and I am a married adult with kids of which I'm proud. With that said, I wouldn't friend my Grandma J if she were alive. Definitely would not have friended her when I was in college or younger.

I still cringe when I think of being at Big Boy and hearing her say "masturbation" with regards to her catching an episode of the formerly hip show, Seinfeld.

I loved my grandparents, but they were old school family values Republicans.

I'm so glad social media and cheap cellphone plans didn't exist when I was in college. Life was simpler without 24/7 need to know constant contact.

Heat wave

It's been in the 90s the last week, so I am thankful for the A/C being up and running. I am thankful for a number of things, but they don't mean anything to anyone but myself.

Having a bi-level home, I'm told that it will never truly be wonderful, but it's fine to me. I grew up without A/C. I've lived in Ohio all of my life in Ohio aside from trips to Florida, DC, and Mexico, so the temperatures we have here are about the same as what I had where I originate.

My parents still live in the same house. They still don't have A/C but in the downstairs kitchen window. There are essentially four rooms(two upstairs bedrooms with a living room, kitchen and a mudroom that has been insulated downstairs).

Aside from not having A/C, I shared a room with my brother. The light switch was a chain that dangled from the ceiling in the middle of a 15 by 15 ft room. It was a long chain that my brother used to take down and put through his nose and pull out of his mouth like a carnival sideshow.

We used box fans and screens in the three windows to circular air in the room.
I grew up with insomnia so I don't think the heat really bothered me as much as my brain not wanting to shutdown at night along with the Drive-thru speakers at Hardee's.

We also never had a car with A/C either. It was just as well to have the windows down since my folks both smoked a couple packs of cigarettes a day, regardless of where they were.

Electricity was too expensive, I guess, so my host family didn't have it. It was a dry heat, but I still would wake up in a sweat drenched outline of myself when I didn't sleep in a hammock.
I got sick when I went to Cancun where all the plazas were 68 degrees and the outdoors were humid and in the 90s. I gotten eaten alive by mosquitoes even wearing Off, so I took to wearing jeans to cover my calves and ankles rather than under protective shorts the rest of the trip.
To this day, I rarely wear shorts unless I'm doing something sporty.

One could argue that I am thankful for A/C because of climate change, but I would disagree. I could go without it if I didn't live with J. J needs A/C and life is easier for me if the A/C is on and working. Getting the A/C was made easier when my father offered to help. Not having a steady income makes me question any purchase that I don't personally feel necessary. If I want to stay married, I need to have A/C.
I am thankful for my parents' help. I might have unpleasant memories from my childhood, but I can block them out seeing that I use such experience as a means to appreciate the simple joys I do encounter in adulthood.
I can say A/C makes me happy because it makes J happy. J is the soul of our family with K and B both gravitating to her. With that said, J keeps me going regardless of my personal failings.

Remember when Hotmail was hot?

Neither do I. But it occurs that it might have been to somebody at one point. Personally, I thought Hotmail was dead when J decided to go with Gmail a few years back. I think she still uses Hotmail for a return address for forwards off the various news sites. She doesn't use Excite for the purpose anymore, anyways.

Remember Freelane? J used it. Then it was gone. I used Simpson's 1stup.com free dial up before it went. Remember when Netzero was free as well? Never used Flooz, but I remember the commercials.

I should have reminiscenced about these things from the Dot.com/Tech Bubble daze when I was in the mood but they didn't come to mind as being that old to be drudged up from my impaired college memories. I guess that a lot of Facebook stock owners don't remember anything that happened 10 years ago, either.

History repeats itself, and Facebook is the punchline. Facebook is free just like Freelane and Netzero, which were fine to use considering dial-up was standard for surfer. DSL didn't kill them off with their speeds, because people like free stuff out of principle.

Didn't AOL used to charge by the minute for dial-up as part of its billing? I remember Compuserve charging subscribers even if they didn't use the service during the month if they didn't cancel. Cell providers used the same business model.

Long walk back to the present- I read that Apple, Google, Microsoft, Amazon seek domains from ICANN, and I which jogged these thoughts about the world before the clutternet, when internet was capitalized and free from citizen journalist wannabes trolling for a fight.

Not a Perfectionist, but I worry about doing things correct the first time.

Just realized a month has gone by since I started re-doing my kitchen floor.

What have I been doing? I have probably been doing everything the hard way, but I don't have a flooring background.

Sure I tiled our half bath a few years after we moved into the house, but the kitchen is six times bigger and I had help from my father in-law who is a tool person. I recall it took us a day to tile, but I don't recall how long I spent removing the flooring and preparing the surface. I do know it was easier since the laminate was glued squares that pealed without needing to have the glue scraped. J and I never used the bathroom since the toilet was broken, so it didn't get any traffic. We had 8" tiles that my father in-law laid. I did all of the cuts based on his markings. I did all of the grout after he left. Didn't have to wait for the adhesive to cure since it was mastic/grout premix. We also didn't use spacers. The tiles just butted up to one another. Didn't have a sink or toilet to work around either since those came later.

Kitchen tiles are 16" so the cuts are trickier and spacers are needed. Have large appliances and cabinets that create  slight obstacles. Hands and back ached from scraping for prolonged periods, so I couldn't work on the floor as frequently as I would have liked. The kitchen is a high traffic area, so I could only work when people weren't going to bother me.

Horrible excuses, but they add up when you consider I did all of the scraping, cutting, and tiling. It looks like I'll do all of the grouting as well.

I make it sound as though J hasn't helped, but she's been there most of the time. She help spacing the tiles as we determined where to place whole tiles. She handed me whole tiles when I was gluing them, so that I didn't have to move around so much. She also kept K and B busy so that I could focus on the job. Finally, she's helped in that she's not complained.

That last item may seem inappropriate, but in the sense that I fret over minute details, it's nice having her say it's looking good.

J is pretty good about letting me do things without being in the way. Just like when we drove to Florida, I did all of the driving but I didn't have to worry about anything aside from road, since I had her navigating and appeasing the not so pleasant K and B. J also prepped drinks, tacos, sandwiches, and Twizzlers so I could keep my eyes on the road and my hands upon the wheel.

The drive down was broken up with us staying the night in Georgia, but we didn't stop on the way home. It's not fun driving through the Carolinas at night. Not sure why the Garmin had us take I95 home when we took I75 down, but who am I to second guess a GPS with live traffic updates?

Just like the trip to Disney made for having memories to cherish, having a beautiful floor for years will be what I will enjoy soon enough. Aches and pains are dulled when you have long term happiness overshadow short term misery.

Superficial Red Herring Commentary

Mike Lupica wrote the other day that President Obama is doomed to lose re-election because the country that elected him four years ago is now too racist to be open minded to his sort of change.

The logic doesn't make sense. The '08 campaign was against an unpopular lame duck president.

How is Obama different than Bush? Essentially the same things are going on, right?

Bush had healthcare reform efforts that weren't "conservative."

Partisanship has made everything seem to be oversimplified as R vs D issues rather than looking at the problems and searching for evidence-based solutions that work within the confines of the Constitution which protects the liberties of citizens.

Wanting something doesn't mean the desired outcome is rationally possible. Life doesn't exist in a vacuum, so theories need to be tested before being fully implemented.

If you view everything in terms of SWOT, then the priorities shape up. The past is done, move on and fix what is broken or throw it away.

Wednesday, a day for rest.

I intended to work on the tiling today, but my back said it needed a rest. Been in a funk from stooping the last few weeks, now with the end in sight, I need not rush it.

I'm not what I used to be, but I have my moments.

Thinking back to the days of being within an 54' trailer and unloading for 90 minutes straight, five days a week, I know that I could do things without feeling pain the next day. (I only remember one day of waking up too sore to move and I called off.)


The thing is, I got paid the same as if I was on the line where I could stand around BS and drink coffee. I only got in the trailer so I had leverage to get more hours. I had a schedule that worked around J's so that I could be home with baby K. No one said anything to me about it, I just requested the days off weekly and I got them while having a full-time schedule. I usually got Wednesday off since we didn't get trucks Wednesday and Sunday. I worked every Sunday for two straight years. I liked Sundays, I worked mostly alone.


I don't miss working retail, but it was work that I didn't have to think about while home. I didn't have to think much while working, either. It was pretty simple and cut and dry what needed done. I always longed to be done and to go home. I had a lot more energy since I never sat during the workday or stared at a PC, so I got a lot of the initial remodeling done on the house during that time.

Aside from the back, my mind has been mush looking at things online.

Internet speed has greatly reduced my overall productivity. Information is compiled as such a rate that I should be come an infovegan or at least give up following sports. Watching overpaid athletes is a waste of time, but yet so hard to give up.

Being nostalgic, reminds me of my dad saying he worked every summer when he first started teaching. He never worked in the summer as long as I can remember. Hopefully, K and B will have a memory or two me actually fixing something. I believe that B will definitely remember my orthopedic procedures to reattach limbs to her dolls.

The closer I get to finishing the tiling, I think about what will be next. Of course, the more work I do, the more inclined I am to feeling the house could be marketable. We need more room for our cars, and Ohio hasn't been a great place for me to find work.
