I see on Facebook memes about people not having hobbies.
Before the pandemic, my work had a meeting where we had an icebreaker where we drew a piece of paper and shared something about himself based upon the color of paper drawn.
My color of paper was to share my hobbies. Rather than say I like Pittsburgh sporting teams or reading or blogging I threw out that my hobbies are whatever my wife wants me to do.
My wife says I'm on my phone too much. I probably am, but I have nothing better to do. She gets annoyed by my wanting to do anything beyond doing her bidding. I'm probably over exaggerating.
Anyways, the icebreaker worked in the sense coworkers from other departments were more inclined to small talk.
Blogging haitus probably occurred to being busy. I have several blogs, but I ceased being active back in December across all of them due to my finally having a 1st shift job. With my being home when everyone else is, I don't have access to a computer like I used to have.
I have a number of interests. I don't follow the news as much since it's mostly fake in that it's insincere. I enjoy twitter, as a means of my info diet, but I mostly follow the Dilbert Guy. I try to to follow economic news, since I have a few 401(k) platforms which I used to monitor daily.
Discover Card says I have a credit score of 849.

new year
Worked during the Sugar Bowl, and I feel as though I didn't miss much. Using the ESPN app on my phone along with Time Warner cable access...

commentary about NFL
As documented earlier, I ceased caring much about all varieties of football. Various reasons for the apathy, but they're moot given sports are dumb on a number of levels. It occurs to me that there is still a team in Cleveland whose name I won't mention due to it probably being offensive to no less than .621% of the American population. I'm faux offended, but only because I am descended from the cited percent on my mother's side. Cleveland NFL team really should change its name or cease to exist again. There's no excuse for being so dreadful in a league with a salary cap and an instant influx of talent through the annual spring draft. Their name is offensive for it labels all with it as LOSERS.

meh madness
Having not followed college basketball this year lead to my feeling meh regarding filling out a bracket. Thought UD would give OSU a challenge and maybe win, but gave that nod to my alma mater, though I figured OSU wouldn't make it passed the second round.
Last week Target had a coupon for $15 off if you buy $40 of their brand of Health/Beauty. After seeing their diapers had the PEE STRIP indicator like Pampers, we bought a box of 116ct sz 1. I think they were listed as $17.49-ish but with coupon, I have no idea.
Supposedly, it's now Spring. Should be up to 60 degree tomorrow before getting back into 30s on the weekend.

In hindsight, I wish I never bought stuff as a kid
Not sure if I mentioned it, but I used to collect comic books at one point. I didn't go nuts or anything seriously devoted. I got sucked into the fad and bought a series that I liked. I had the first 8 issues of the comic, and was broached by a classmate who was much more serious about a swap. I got 16 comics for my 8. The ones I got had a central theme to them as being The Punisher, Wolverine, or New Warriors. I subsequently bought a random comic regarding Wolverine, Punisher, or Venom, but I soon forgot about my comics once I moved out of my parents' house and went to college.
I got married while in college, so I never had the complete removal of personal stuff from my technical permanent residence. I basically just abandoned my stuff thinking my folks would leave my room as is and I'd get around to it when I felt like it. I was wrong. My mom isn't sentimental and tossed my treasured things or let her animals pee on them for some in-explicit reason. My baseball cards and coin collection were salvaged from the demise, but my drawings and comics didn't.
Though I was angry when I learned of the above unfortunate events, I forgot about them much like they were the recollections of a stranger until reading an article about adult nerds being upset their retirement savings(comic collection) were being sold at pennies on the FACE value of the comics. I got angry about the loss then remembered that they were probably worthless anyways.
Getting mad about money spent on disposed items is not as silly as regretting paying for things that intended to be disposable. I bought a lot of toys that gave me many hours of joy, if I hadn't bought them, then I wouldn't have the memories and would have spent the money elsewhere.
Today, I had a couple errands which I figured K and B could tag along and give J some rest as D was napping between feedings. They both wanted to go to Target. K had a giftcard while B had toothfairy money, while I had to see if they carried newborn diapers in the quantity boxes advertised.
My mission was a wash, so we ventured to the toy section. K wanted Lego Minifigs to the Lego Movie. he had enough to buy three, while B didn't have enough to buy one(but I would spot her the difference). K quickly picked three mystery packets and was content, while B wanted specific characters, a mermaid or girl with a stripe in her hair. I started feeling the packets for telltale signs of ones to discard. K assisted in the search until we came to a packet that didn't have moveable legs much like the girl with a stripe in her hair would have. B was content with the finding so we left with those four.
K would soon be crying when we got home, for he picked two minifigs he already had from our trip to the Lego Store on New Year's Day. Sad that B was patient to get a figue she wanted while the older K was haphazard with his decision. Maybe one day he'll be better with his money. Just last week he wanted to spend $4 on a digital edition of a 25 page Star Wars Comic, which I am glad I talked him out of purchasing.
Neither kid wanted to go get Pizza Pizza, but they wanted Crazy Bread. they didn't eat the Crazy Bread the last time I got it, so I didn't get it. Sure it's $1.99 if you bother to go to their website and print the $2.00 off coupon that is always there, but $1.99 is better saved than wasted in my book. Ironically, I bought two pizzas for $5 since I got my pizza card filled last time I was there.
Tonight, I watched the Playoff game in hopes of seeing Tom Brady cry, but the game was a blowout in his favor. I could have used that time spent elsewhere besides the tv screen.

Joy of Football
Didn't watch the Orange Bowl Friday. Totally forgot about it until the next day when we were at J's work as she tied up loose ends before officially starting maternity leave.
I watched one Buckeye Game all year, and I didn't watch all of it. I figure that I didn't waste 30 hours given the end result was a lousy 40-35 loss to ACC's Clemson Tigers.
B1G TEN is not much of a Conference, so nothing really matter until "post-season," and Urban Meyer is 0-2 there as a Buckeye Head Coach. Being 2-0 against the Team Up North, is meaningless, these days.
Anyways, I watched a single Steeler Game all year and they lost on Turkey Day. I watched parts of the Green Bay game as I was putting together a changing table, but that was just background noise. Was hoping they'd make the playoffs, but the KC Chiefs lost a game they should have won to the Chargers thus allowing the Chargers to gain the final seed.
Annoyed, I was hoping the Chargers would get a chance to end the Chiefs Post Season, but they didn't get a chance since KC CHOKED IN INDY! While the Chargers beat the higher seeded Cincinnati Bungles. I watched the latter game and thoroughly enjoyed the mistakes made by the ginger haired quarterback who gave the game away.
Doubt it will happen, but Marvin Lewis should be let go much like Dusty Baker was let go by the Red Legs. Neither knows how to manage a winner in the post season in Cincy. Mike Zimmer has to be on somebody's radar to fill one of the vacancies made in the past week.
Only an idiot would take the Cleveland HC opening since it has been the downfall to any coach who has ventured there since the REAL BROWNS moved to Baltimore and won a couple Lombardi Trophies as the "Ravens." Side note, Jim Tressel would be a great Browns Head Coach for he is a big fan of the PUNT.

Blah feeling of sports
I just wasted a couple hours of my life listening to a loss. At least I've been good about not following non-baseball sports of late, but it's still a waste of time.

Final straw
If I could give up my passion for baseball, then I'd be free to pursue so many things.
I was listening to the game tonight, and the way it ended made me feel ill.
Perhaps following professional sports is akin to playing the lottery for both are wasteful of resources better spent elsewhere.

Meh about football
I've been annoyed by football talk on the radio. I could care less about football at this point in time. It's weird, but something about last season really made me stop caring.
Whether it was the first mentioning of anything relating to Jerry Sandusky or the fact that my alma mater was undefeated and bowl ineligible, I'm not sure. Steelers not making the playoffs a year after being embarrassed by Tim Tebow, didn't help.
You'd think that following a team with a record 20 consecutive losing seasons would make me give up on baseball, but it gave me a different resolve so that I feel like September and October are for baseball not football. Maybe I'll feel less meh when the baseball season is over.

17 million dollars?
I scratch my head when I think of announcers talking about Joe Flacco making $17 million as though it was an obvious conclusion.
I don't begrudge Joe Flacco making his dough, but I wonder if his offensive line might take offense and miss a block or two and lead to his early retirement.
NFL Rosters have 53 guys on them, right? Salary cap is currently $120.6M, so it pays to be the starting QB.
I'm not going to look up the salaries of every team and see if they are at cap limits, but I have to wonder about the cash flow involved with the economics of professional sports. If there were double the number of teams in the NFL, would the sport still be interesting? College football is generating unlimited players that are ultimately subsidized by taxpayer dollars whether through state schools or government grants or loans being allocated or tax write-off donations from alumni. If there's more teams, then there would be more wealth to spread around, right?
Just thinking...

Bye week
I wonder if anybody actually will cease to follow the NFL due to the horrid officiating of late.
I doubt it seeing that the league is a bunch of RICH 1%'ers and we're supposed to hate the rich that don't pay their fair share.
Even a team of losers is filled with such people, yet teams like the Browns still have die-hard fans.
I remember when there used to not be bye weeks. I'm not a junky that needs to watch football every week, but bye weeks annoy me to enough to feel apathy towards the sport for a week.

Fall
I like September. Something about weather being around 78 degrees with a slight breeze is so refreshing compared to the heat of summer. I like summer but I don't like wearing shorts. I'm not into swimming. I just assume every day have its high be in the 70s and low in the 50s. Only downer about fall is that the days get shorter and time changes.
I think I'm growing out of watching football regularly. I just have a hard time getting excited when key players are always hurt thus making subs play. Stupid penalties occur. Almost seems like there's savages playing the game. Saw a guy get knocked out yesterday, but the hit didn't look bad or let alone intentional. I'm biased so I see what I see with blinders. Having a favorite team is meaningless. Football could be banned and life would go on. Football is fun to watch when plays work or play makers do their thing. When chaos takes place, it's just a mess.
Dudes are fast and muscular hitting one another. It's almost as though they need to have weight limits.
Never thought the sport was too violent until yesterday. I think seeing Matt Schaub's ear may have been the clincher.

Where does time go?
Has it really been a year? Being unemployed sounds like having a ton of free time, but looking for work is pretty much a full-time job.
This week has been rougher than others. I had an interview for a job I didn't get, but wanted and dreaded at the same time. I wanna work so bad that I'd be willing to do things I would have thought unreasonable a month ago. My strategy isn't working, so I have to seriously think about moving. If I was on my own it wouldn't be a problem. Logistics dictate the variable options I can pursue, and none of them are family friendly. I don't see the possibility of us both landing new jobs and selling the house before moving as too probable.
People change jobs and move all the time, but I didn't grow up in a family where such things were seriously considered. My grandparents lived in the same house my dad grew up in until my Grandma had to be moved into a senior apartment building. Same could be said of my Dad and his brothers. My one uncle died and the other divorced, so they didn't leave their houses by choice. I believe that they all retired with pensions from their employers(only my grandfather worked in the private sector).
With that said, I'm going to change the blog in that this domain will be more focused on subjects not related to sports, fiction, job searching, parenthood or nostalgia.

Would I pass on $3.8M?
Not sure how anyone can pass on $3,800,000 guaranteed, but Mark Appel of Stanford did.
With it being Friday the 13th, who could be seen as the unlucky one in this arrangement?
Pirates are out a pick this year that may or may not have panned out in a few years, while Appel goes back to school and hopes to get drafted higher and receive more $ NEXT YEAR.
Delaying a professional career that pays over $24M for an elite pitcher seems silly, but what do I know?
A lot of smart people go to Stanford.
Best wishes to Mark Appel, regardless.

Alvarez, Pedro. El Toro. #24
I've seen one game at PNC, and the Pirates lost to the Phillies. Pedro Alvarez hit his first career MLB homer.
It was my son's first time at a ballgame, and he cried until the 3rd inning when he realized the Phillies were winning BIG TIME. He liked them. He adopted them as his team once he saw they were opposing my team sometime the year before, and he stuck to liking them as much as he cared for any team.
My son is left-handed and didn't like baseball, so I was willing to let him like whomever he wanted if it spurred his interest any.
I doubt anyone will really remember seeing Alvarez's first dinger since 90% of the packed stadium were Phillies fans, and they seemed ignorant of their surroundings. One fan behind me was perplexed that a guy not hitting his weight was in the lineup let alone able to it a ball over the left-center wall off their fringe 5th starter Kendrick.
Alvarez had a fair game today, and he's been on fire of late. SSS is what Keith Law is tweeting at the moment, and I agree. It's a game of adjustments.
Not sure I like the pieces that make up the team as individual players, but the Buccos didn't field a winner when they had Aramis Ramirez, Brian Giles, Jason Bay, Jason Kendell, Jason Schmidt, or Oliver Perez.
If they get timely hitting, field cleanly, and throw strikes, they won't embarrass themselves too often. May started ugly, hopefully they got it out of their system and can get over .500 soon.
I doubt it will happen, but stranger things have happened.

A long line of dead Chargers?
Saw in my Thursday Dayton Daily News that Junior Seau, 43, was the 8th member of the Chargers' Super Bowl team to die, and that all were under the age of 45. With the previous players' deaths being attributed to heart attacks, to a plane crash and to a lightning strike, the plot to a book came to me.
Specifically, Lawrence Block's A Long Line of Dead Men came to mind. In the book, which ironically was published in 1994, a group of 30 men who meet for an annual dinner start to die off mysteriously very much like a certain group of Chargers.
There was a time that I read all the Matthew Scudder books. I like mysteries, and Block's are a quick read. I might remember all the stories, but they blur over time. A Long Line of Dead Men was unique enough that I had no problem coming up with the title, from all of the various novels from the series.
I didn't like that particular Chargers team because they beat my Steelers in the AFC Championship game, but it is sad when anyone dies prematurely.

Game of adjustments
Errors are maddening.
I wish that I could give up following baseball. If I didn't after the '94-'95 strike, or 19 consecutive losing seasons, then I doubt I ever will.
It's not like I'm a Browns fan because the Browns are now the Ravens as far as I'm concerned. But then again, NFL has a salary cap and a draft that makes immediate impacts for teams that aren't good.
Baseball is so unpredictable.
Drafting high school players and having to wait five years or so for them to work their way up through the minors is just unpredictable.
I've been excited about so many players coming up only for them to get injured or not progress beyond AA.
They don't get promoted based on seniority as much as for performance against the competition.
Athletes like Bryce Harper are rare. He dropped out of high school and got his GED to enter Junior College early. Who does that?
Football is different. I believe that I remember that Maurice Clarett finished High School early to start at OSU in the spring to be advanced of the typical freshman.
College football at OSU under Jim Tressel was pretty much professional football.
Clarett got dismissed and tried to enter the NFL draft but Sonia Sotomayor ruled in favor of the NFL of barring him and Mike Williams from entering prior to being three years removed from high school.
Clarett had other problems and failed to play on Sundays.
NBA has a one and done policy after the influx of teenagers going into the league became ridiculous. I can't stand NBA as it is today for the fundamentals are lacking that existed when I was a boy watching Bird vs. Magic.
Something about baseball makes it better to follow than other sports. Players don't change teams as often. They can change positions. They can have long careers. They usually have to be able to hit and and play defense. The season is long, but it is daily entertainment.
Baseball is game of adjustments. Being able to throw a ball fast or hit it hard doesn't always guarantee success.
MLB games shouldn't have 4 errors in them!

Pirates treading near .500
As a life long Buccos fan, I dislike the Atlanta Braves.
Last July I stayed up to see a game blown after 19 innings. The Pirates were in the play off hunt, and they folded following that game in Atlanta.
This season, they finished a rough April in Atlanta with a win to be 10-12, when a year earlier they were 12-15 on May 1st.
They had great pitching with an era of 3.64 to start the season last year, and surprisingly, they have a team era of 2.78 this spring. No one on the Brewers pitching staff is currently below 3.00, and the Brewers won the division last year.
Two teams have a better ERA. Pirates have not been able to score runs, hence the losing record.
Hopefully, they get some timely hitting and are able to have a positive May.
They play Milwaukee June 1, and they have had a hard time against the Brew Crew the last decade or so.
