Being a librarian, I was originally mystified by Twitter as being a viable tool for regular consumption. Of course, it took my reading All a Twitter by Tee Morris to remotely appreciate its applications. Now I use Twitter as a news crawl and follow things I don't think about hourly. Freakonomics has a good blog that started off the NYT column page, and they tweet about new posts, so I don't have to go to their site and be disappointed by their lack of a new posting.
Twitter saves time, but can also serve as a means to confuse the heck out of people when you follow irrelevant people that tweet inane observations, one word posts, or re-tweet posts from spoof celebrity accounts. With that said, I have yet to find 100+ people to follow, for I don't have that sort of time on my hands regardless of my employment status.
