Green means go

Five nights a week, I drive the same route to work. The route I take has one left turn the whole 22 mile trip. The turn is at an intersection with a light that has a sensor for the green left arrow about four car lengths back from the light. Traffic coming the opposite direction is usually heavy double lane that bottle necks upon crossing the intersection, and it's not unusual to get stuck the whole green light if you don't get the arrow. Out of habit, I always stop on the sensor, regardless of the traffic. I live by the mall, so traffic can come out of nowhere quickly, so why tempt fate and assume no cars around means I'll get through the light without the arrow by the time it turns green.  Sunday, I drive to work an hour earlier than other days because they close an hour earlier.
Yesterday was a typical Sunday. I got to the intersection when the light was red. There were no cars waiting or flowing any direction, but I was waiting to turn left on the spot with three car lengths of asphalt between me and the intersection. Weirdly, I didn't get the arrow. The light just turned green, so I hesitated to turn. I felt silly considering I had been alone at the intersection a few moments and there was no sign of anything as I pulled up to turn left. As I was crossing into the intersection, to my horror, the corner of my eye caught a glimpse of a white object speeding towards me, so I braked and braced for impact. The car didn't stop, but sailed inches from hitting the front of my car and stopped about 30 yards after blowing past the red light.
The speed limit is 45, but I estimate he was going 60. In my mind, I'm surely lucky to not be dead. If I hadn't hesitated, I may have been a few yards further into the intersection and had taken the force of Honda into me directly. I have no idea how good my Passat's side impact protection is, but a car going 60 mph into the driver's side gives me cause to to be thankful it didn't happen.
Hell, if the Honda even clipped the front of my car, I probably would have got hurt at that speed.
Maybe I'm over reacting. Just saw some videos of side impacts and VW Passat has a decent rating or at least under the controlled variables in this clip:

That's hittting a Passat at 38.5 mph, I believe, so a greater speed of 45-60mph may not look as pleasant.
Wow. I really don't want to test it, but I feel better now. Sorry for thinking I dodged death, but it really scares you when you see a car coming fast at you out of no where.
