Got to the part in Freedomnomics which outlines how Public Universities bully private schools in a section titled "State Predators and Private Lambs," and I must say I agree with Lott's assessment wholeheartedly.
Politics is something I don't casually discuss with people, but it's something that I'm able to discuss logically for my views are simple. I am repulsed by utopian societies akin to those depicted in 1984 and Brave New World that have a centralized government dictating all aspects of one's existence without the hint of freewill being allowed.
I am a staunch believer in freewill and uniqueness of the individual. Being a team player does not mean one must give up his personal identity, but rather utilize his strengths to guide the team forward.
I believe that the government meddles into things with good intentions only to make things worse more times than not. If everyone is playing nice in government, then problems don't get ironed out until too late. Politicians are not gods. They don't have to pass an IQ test to be elected nor do they even have to have an average student's grasp of Natural Science, yet they can pass laws that dictate how you live your life.
Politicians live in bubbles and lobbyists have access to their bubbles. A good lobbyist sells his pitch like Joe DiMaggio did for Mr. Coffee. Joltin' Joe wasn't a coffee expert, but he was famous and likable enough to give the drip machine a try.
Laws should be read before they are voted upon, but laws aren't written for the mainstream news consuming public, which is hunger for news 24/7 and likely to believe what they hear on tv because experts say such is such. Congress deeming itself as experts in economics and science without discussion is scary when they don't even bother to read the bills they want passed.
With politics, we have parties that have platforms that supposedly
define the candidates rather than the candidates defining themselves
with any sort of background of accomplishment or even a resume laden
with qualifications.
Now it seems that the better the slogans drown out discussions on the issues when they are repeated much like sheep saying "four legs good, two legs bad." Because, "If Comrade Napoleon says it, it must be right." Or if anything is wrong, it's Snowball's fault!
Sorry for referencing Animal Farm, but I got to thinking about it yesterday when I watched a Batman episode where he runs for mayor against the Penguin. The farce was that Batman was too good to be a politician and be sneaky while Penguin manipulated situations to his favor by shear "flash and sizzle" to quote IMDB.
