Hiatus from following sports

Baseball season is over as far as I'm concerned. I'm not into basketball, hockey, or football as I used to be.  Growing up, I liked them all with football being the least favorite. I changed after college to liking it more than basketball and hockey. NBA was the first sport for me to lose interest. The ML Carr era as a coach made me feel ill until Pitino and O'Brien gave the team a sort of spirit, but the '98 lockout made rest of the league  meh-ish. College basketball is still not the same since NBA poaches the best players after a year. College football is too rah-rah and merges with NFL too much given the mock draft being a 365 day thing now. Hockey is a mess, since players aren't with teams long.

Baseball is the only sport which has a long-term organizational commitment to players. Players are drafted. Players stay in the minors and work their way to "The Show." Free agency is based on service time in the big leagues and follows years arbitration. Good players can be kept through their prime or dealt for prospects that start the process over.

Players are cogs, so losing a superstar doesn't necessarily mean the team outright sucks. Each team has holes where upgrades can be made through free agency, trades, or promotions from minor leagues. Platoons work in baseball.

Baseball is a dynamic sport where even a bad team can win game on a given night.

With the season over for me, I find myself thinking I invested too much time pouring through stats. Nothing I do as a fan has an effect on my team. Baseball is entertainment but the actually games aren't as significant as the assessing the games' stats after the fact.
