A few weeks ago it rained a lot. Couldn't go to the pool. A couple weeks ago it was in the 70s, couldn't go to the pool. This week it's been 90s. Went to the pool on Monday and stayed much longer than I liked, so we all got too much sun regardless of our use of sun block. Felt too sunned from Monday to go back until today. Only stayed an hour and a half, for it is too hot to be out long without a constant sip of water being taken.

About Monday and why I was there longer than intended. I woke up determined to hit the pool when it opened. On arrival, the kids were like bumps on a log getting out of the car, so I neglected to grab my keys from the ignition before getting them and our pool stuff out and locking the car.
I had a mild panic attack. I say mild because we live walking distance from the pool, so locking the keys was a mild annoyance. I really didn't want to carry stuff back to the house and to walk back, so I figured I'd see someone at the pool that could keep an eye on the kids while I jogged back to the house and back.
I didn't see the usual people I trust, but I got to know a new one since B was playing with a free from school whose mom was super nice.

Zealand 20 About McAfee 2 1 By Shane Keats, Research Analyst, McAfee, Inc. and Eipe Koshy, Software Development Engineer, McAfee, Inc. 4 Report The Web’s Most Dangerous Search Terms Key Findings McAfee searched for more than 2,600 popular keywords. For each keyword, we examined the first five pages of results across each of five major search engines. On average, each keyword generated a little more than 250 results. Overall, we examined more than 413,000 unique URLs (web addresses). We assigned each keyword a category and a country and then ranked them by the risk of their resulting URLs. In addition, using data from Hitwise, a search intelligence company, we conducted much deeper dives into specific keywords. Keywords were ranked in two ways: 1) the average risk of all results and 2) the maximum risk of the riskiest page of results. Overall, the average risk level of all results pages was just 1.7%. In other words, in a list of 250 results, • just over four were risky. However, when we averaged the most risky pages (the page from each keyword search that had the • most risky results), the average risk shot up to 10.0%. In other words, in a list of 250 results, just over 25 were risky. The categories with the worst maximum risk profile were lyrics keywords (26.3%) and phrases that • include the word “free” (21.3%). If a consumer landed at the riskiest search page for a typical lyrics search, one of four results would be risky. The categories with the worst average risk profile were also lyrics sites (5.1%) and “free” sites (7.3%). • The categories with the safest risk profile were health-related search terms and searches concerning • the recent economic crisis. The maximum risk on a single page of queries on the economy was 3.5% and only 0.5% risky across all results. Similarly, even the worst page for health queries had just 4.0% risky sites and just 0.4% risk overall. We used Hitwise to generate a detailed list of keyword variations for 12 search terms. As defined by • McAfee, the riskiest set of keyword variations was “screensavers” with a maximum risk of 59.1% and an average risk of 34.4%, substantially higher than the study averages of 10.0% and 1.7%. Surprisingly, searches using the keyword “Viagra,” a popular keyword that is a frequent “visitor” in our spam filters, yielded the fewest risky sites. Keywords popular in non-U.S. countries were significantly riskier than those popular in the United • States. 14 countries had keyword lists that exposed users to a higher maximum risk than average, including the Czech Republic (14.2%) and Brazil (12.1%). And 12 countries were overall riskier than the average, including Mexico (1.9%) and India (1.8%). These findings may prove to be anomalies, but if subsequent studies confirm them, this could be early evidence of a troubling new trend of scammers targeting non-U.S. victims. What Makes Certain Search Terms Risky? Why are certain keywords or search terms riskier than others? While it’s not always possible to understand the minds and motivations of today’s sophisticated hacker s , McAfee can provide some insight based on known techniques employed by cybercriminals. Hackers are most successful when they can attract a large number of victims. One way to target big crowds online is to track current events—everything from celebrity meltdowns and natural disasters to holidays and popular music. One key tool cybercriminals use to snare victims is to get them to download a computer file or program that comes with a malicious payload. With these two concepts in play, let’s take a look at one of our riskiest search terms: free music downloads. On average, 20.7% of results were risky (compared to just 1.7% of all search terms) and on one results page out of the 25 search engine pages we rated, we found a whopping 42.9% of results risky. As consumers continue to convert their music libraries to digital formats like MP3 files, they also struggle with the cost of buying music they may already own in cassette, LP record, or other formats. Caught between those two needs, many consumers have heard that the web can be a source for free Hackers are most successful when they can attract a large number of victims. One way to target big crowds online is to track current events—everything from celebrity meltdowns and natural disasters to holidays and popular music. 5 Report The Web’s Most Dangerous Search Terms music. If the consumer is already looking for music, then they already have the mindset of being willing to download something—and that makes the malware author’s work easier. A website’s subject matter or type of content can also affect its riskiness. Two such examples are lesser known pornographic and gambling sites that can be used to host malicious software such as exploits, dialer s , Trojan s , and other malwar e . This type of content can lead consumers down the dark alleys of the Internet, and consumers expose themselves to more risk when they attempt to search for these terms. When determining “market size” for their scams, cybercriminals may look at the total number of website links a search term yields. Googlebattle.com is a good tool for illustrating this. McAfee found “Brad Pitt” more dangerous to search for than “Hugh Jackman” (14.3% maximum risk to 9.1%). Similarly, Googlebattle produces 26.4 million hits for “Brad Pitt” and just 5.5 million for “Hugh Jackman.” It’s important to note that the number of website links is just one factor a cybercriminal might use when weighing whether to target a keyword. For example, Googlebattle finds Olympics soccer has more links than Olympic swimming, but for U.S. audiences in particular, “Michael Phelps” was a more popular— and riskier—search term. Similarly, spikes in news coverage can also drive even consistently popular keywords out of the “most risky zone.” For example, three popular female celebrities are Angelina Jolie (8.3% maximum risk) Oprah Winfrey (10%) and Beyonce Knowles (10%). But searches for Zuma Rossdale, the daughter of Gavin Rossdale and Gwen Stefani, can be as risky as 25%, suggesting that malicious or unscrupulous players do pay significant attention to news events. Study Methodology Each phrase and keyword was searched for in five major U.S.-based search engines—Google, Yahoo!, Live, AOL, and Ask. We looked at the first five pages of results for each keyword and counted the number of red and yellow rated sites on each page (as determined by McAfee SiteAdvisor ® ) and compared them to the total number of rated sites. We did not count sites for which we did not yet have a rating. We counted both sponsored and organic links and we weighted them equally. McAfee SECURE ™ sites that undergo daily vulnerability testing were counted as green-rated sites for the purposes of this study. We then ranked the riskiness of a particular search term in two ways. Average risk is the total number of red- and yellow-rated sites divided by the total number of red-, yellow-, and green-rated sites on the 25 search pages we examine. Maximum risk is the single page with the highest percentage of red- and yellow-rated sites. 6 Report The Web’s Most Dangerous Search Terms For example, a keyword which generated ten rated results per page would yield 250 total rated sites. The average risk would equal (red- plus yellow-rated sites / red- plus yellow- plus green-rated sites). Ten red- plus 15 yellow- and 225 green-rated sites would yield an average risk of 10% (25/250). If one page displayed two red- plus two yellow- and six green-rated sites, the maximum risk would equal 40% (4/10). McAfee SiteAdvisor rating methodology Our site safety opinions come from the McAfee SiteAdvisor site rating database. This database includes ratings for more than 20 million sites that together account for approximately 95 percent of the trafficked web. Website ratings are based on tests for the following security threats and concerns: Risky downloads • —Downloadable files that contain viruse s , spywar e , or adwar e or make unrelated changes to the downloading computer Browser exploits • —Also known as a driveby download, this type of malicious code enables viruses, keystroke logger s , or spyware to install on a consumer’s computer without consent and/or knowledge Email practices • —Registration forms and other sign-ups that result in high volume email, highly commercial email or both. We also test for difficultly unsubscribing. Phishin • g —Scam sites that try to trick visitors into believing the site is legitimate Excessive popups • —Sites that engage in aggressive popup behavior or display large numbers of pop ups Linking practices • —Sites that aggressively link to other red- or yellow-rated sites The vast majority of tests are conducted by test computers. In some cases, McAfee staff augments this automated testing with manual examinations. Red ratings are given to websites that fail one or more of these tests. Yellow ratings are given to sites that, in our opinion, merit caution before using. Green ratings are given to sites with very minor or no risks found. Sources of data This study examined the relative risk of searching for approximately 2,658 unique popular keywords and phrases across 413,368 unique URLs. In all cases, adult filters were on. The lists group together related search phrases under a single representative word or phrase. For example, “Miley Cyrus” is undoubtedly a popular search term. But so are “Miley Cyrus lyrics,” “Miley Cyrus videos,” “Miley Cyrus and Nick Jonas,” and “Miley Cyrus pictures.” For Yahoo! and AOL, the only search term to make their year end lists was the first—“Miley Cyrus.” We also know that people pick search words and use search engines in sometimes unusual ways. According to Googl e , the phrase “www google com” was searched approximately five million times on Google itself! To better capture this variety, McAfee used keyword variations from data company Hitwise 1 to get a more detailed picture of the nature of risk for certain keywords. If we look more closely at one phrase and its variations, we can begin to understand more about search risk. These deep dives looked at the 25 most popular search word variations for 12 popular keywords in the United States. The data can come from anywhere, for example, occurrences of these words in twitter posts or number of searches in Google etc. Data updated every day would be preferable however it is not necessary. Others have thankfully been doing that. The short answer, as I’ve written before, is that they are all heavily filtered. That’s why you don’t see popular terms like "sex" and "porn" and navigational queries like "google" showing up. I might try to come back to this in more depth, but here’s a summary of the lists and what people are saying about them. Plus, I’ll explain that chart above and how it shows that list from Google doesn’t match what Google’s own Google Trends says. Dweebs, horndogs and geezers from Nick Carr at Rough Type has a nice short thought piece, and Techdirt does a succinct kick-in-the-knees to these lists, as does Business 2.0. Via Nick’s post, here’s a nice chart of top queries going back over time. Techmeme also points you to related posts centering around Nick’s article. Greg Jarboe looks at top news queries versus web queries. That’s interesting, but by this point, you’re probably losing faith that any of these lists actually match the reality of what people search for :) Now back to the chart above. I know from past articles that sex is one of the most popular search terms, consistently over time. I also know that lots of people search for sites like Google even on Google. So I took the top two terms Google says were most popular in 2006 — bebo at #1 and myspace at #2 — and checked them against sex and google using Google Trends. If the top two terms were really that popular, they should be well above the ones I’m guessing at. Nope. They weren’t (chart is for 2006, all regions). Sex as a search term almost consistently showed more volume than any of the other terms. Google as a term was right up there with it. MySpace is even far, far above Bebo. Next I put all top five queries that Google said were tops for 2006: bebo myspace world cup metacafe radioblog Computer says no: Google Trends Versus Top Google Terms Of 2006 - 2 Other than the World Cup, none of these terms have popularity even approaching the supposed number two, MySpace. It may be there are a number of search variations that are rolled up (misspellings, partial URLs), but it would have to be a lot of them to make an impact. But it pretty much looks like there’s a bunch of terms more popular that aren’t being shown. Just for fun, I tried a last chart, putting terms I know are popular like "yahoo," "hotmail" and "amazon" against the supposed number two and number four terms. The chart: Google Trends Versus Top Google Terms Of 2006 - 3 If I were snarky, I’d be saying Google deliberately dropped out competitors like Yahoo, Hotmail and arguably Amazon to make a partner like MySpace look better. Of course, why non-partner Bebo gets showered with popularity it doesn’t seem to have makes no sense. And more important, I honestly don’t believe that’s why some of these more popular terms were dropped. Search engines, when they make these lists, routinely drop out common navigational requests that are uninteresting to see over time. Yahoo, Hotmail, Amazon — even Google are all these types of terms. I will follow up on why they don’t show, why Google Trends is different from the top list and so on. But the filtering is hardly unique to Google, nor something I think was competitively done. But it sure makes a further mockery of these lists. Oh, need the lists? Google said its annual list does not reflect the most-searched-for terms by volume; rather, it selects the fastest-growing search terms and removes those that are always very popular, such as searches for Web sites that host free e-mail accounts or adult content. Google does not reveal how many searches it takes to reach the top 10, but it said millions of searches are conducted each day. "We view Google as the entryway for things to the Internet," Merrill said. "We’re looking for things that have changed this year and what’s new and interesting." Of course, that’s not what the Google press release on the top terms says: Google Year-End Zeitgeist Highlights Most Popular Search Queries and Trends of 2006 Social networking sites top the list this year’s most searched queries Google today announced its annual Zeitgeist, featuring lists and charts of the most popular and fastest-rising global search terms that people have typed into Google.com. Not fastest growing. Not most interesting. Yes, the regular Google Zeitgeist has focused on "gaining" queries since it began years ago. But the year-end Zeitgeist is pretty clearly saying most popular: A year’s worth of search speaks to our collective consciousness, and 2006 is no exception. To compile these year-end lists and graphs, we reviewed a variety of the most popular search terms that people typed into Google. Click on all the tabs to learn something new — or confirm that you too reflect the spirit of the times. Except where noted, all of these search terms are global for Google.com. Nothing on the home page suggests that "Top Searches" means the most interesting/fastest growing searches after Google’s removed whatever it wants. You target the terms in organic search optimization and through your pay-per-click campaigns, and acquire as much of that Web traffic as possible. Then move on to the much more complex task of managing the long tail of search, right? Well, maximizing the potential of high-traffic keywords is actually more complex than it looks. There are a number of best practices and a handful of potential issues which arise when incorporating high-traffic terms into your search campaigns: High Cost and High Competition - If you know that a term gets searched on a lot, chances are a lot of other people do too. The market is flooded with free to cheap keyword research services which offer anyone with Internet access the same list of competitive keywords you're targeting. Broad Phrases Have Questionable Intent - For a phrase to get a lot of search volume, it typically has to be a short key phrase. In fact, it's often the case that the most searched keywords have multiple meanings. It's difficult to target a term (particularly as you pay for each click) when a fair number of searchers are after something slightly to wholly different than what you're offering. All of a sudden your "high-volume keyword" offers slightly less relevant traffic for your business. A Short List of Keywords is a Stagnant List of Keywords - While the long tail is extremely fluid and often subject to the unpredictable whims of the billions of individuals currently searching for content on the Web, the most popular keywords are far less mutable. These keywords' search volumes rarely change, and focusing a search campaign around acquiring this traffic can quickly lead to traffic plateaus. But, for all the buzz surrounding long-tail keywords, there's still a lot of traffic in the high-traffic, most searched words (go figure). So the question becomes how to attack high-volume keywords within your search marketing campaign. That's precisely what we'll deal with in the coming paragraphs. Paying Less for Popular Keyword Searches Popular keywords are often priced high. This is because, as we mentioned, the traffic-driving keywords aren't a secret. Your competitors know about them, and are likely bidding them up. For this reason, you'll need to improve Quality Score on this keyword and its Ad Group in order to lower the amount you're bidding on it within your pay-per-click campaign. Quality Score algorithms are comprised of a few core elements, and all of these revolve around relevance. WordStream offers multiple Quality Score solutions to improve the relevance (and lower the cost) of your keywords: Keyword Grouping Tools - A key component of the Quality Score algorithm is the relevance of a keyword to its Ad Group. We'll show you how WordStream's grouping tools enable you to create Quality Score friendly groupings centered around traffic-driving SEM keywords. Ad Text and Landing Page Optimization Tools - Two of the most important factors in achieving high Quality Score are the relevance of your keywords and search queries, and your historical click-through rate (CTR). Being able to generate ads and landing pages that speak to your search queries are crucial to pleasing search engines and searchers (if an ad is relevant to a query, a searcher is more likely to click, and if a landing page offers similar messaging to the ad they just clicked on, a searcher is more likely to convert). Grouping Your Most Popular Search Keywords Let's imagine we're running a website that sells electronic gadgets. We sell items items such as cell phones, laptops, and LCD monitors. We take a look at our log files, and note that organic search is driving the most traffic for the terms: Cell phones Laptops (one word) LCD monitors Some free keyword research confirms that these are high-traffic keywords. So, what do we do with them? The problem is, these words aren't closely related. If we attempt to cram these three words into a single Ad Group, we'll get slammed on Quality Score and will have to pay a lot every time someone clicks on our ad. A better idea is to give each term its own group. Better yet: while we're creating a keyword group for each of these terms, why not surround it with keywords that search engines will view as closely related? We'll also want to make sure that these keywords are all linguistically similar: that way, we can easily write ad text variations that speak to the entire Ad Group. Popular keywords can be easily grouped with semantically similar key phrases using WordStream's querying and grouping tools. Note the process here: Query your personal keyword database - Type in the high-volume keyword in question, and have every highly relevant variation of that term (in this case, "cell phones") returned for you. Create a group - Simply click "Create Keyword Group" and WordStream has created a brand new, Quality Score friendly keyword grouping you can easily turn into an Ad Group. And imagine how easy it will be to write ad text that speaks to all these keywords (they all contain some variation of "cell phone"!). Additionally, you can focus on only the "most popular" variations of this keyword, moving the long-tail variations into their own group, if you find that that works better for your campaign's tracking and performance: Sort by high volume keywords by limiting the number of terms or visits. You can sort by number of terms (in this case "cell phones" consists of two terms, or words) or a minimum amount of visits: High traffic keywords can be segmented by visits within WordStream. And, as always, a new segmentation is only a click away. Making Your Most Popular Keyword Searches Your Most Relevant Keyword Searches Additionally, WordStream offers tools that help you to craft compelling and Quality Score friendly ad text and landing pages: Create compelling ad text that speaks to your more popular key phrases with WordStream's ad text editing tools. In the above image, WordStream is suggesting text to be included in the ad for this ad group. You'll have to edit the text to include a clear call to action, and to make it more compelling and attractive to searchers (proper punctuation, logical phrasing, etc.) but WordStream offers the linguistic foundations for a successful text ad. Similarly, the application can suggest effective landing page content for a given Ad Group. The above text editor suggests potential landing page "headers." Additionally, if you're attempting to craft a single landing page for multiple groups, WordStream offers sophisticated visualization tools which allow you to see not only a single group, but other, related child groups: Create targeted landing pages for popular keywords and associated groupings using WordStream's landing page tool set. Here we see a series of variations of "cell phones." Using these phrases prominently on the landing page in question will increase the relevancy score for "cell phones" while also improving the user experience and increasing conversions (as searchers are more likely to engage with your landing page when they see the term they were searching for). expanding and refining the reach of popular searches While it seems counterintuitive, it's necessary to simultaneously expand and constrict the reach of these broad keywords: Grow Your Audience - It's important to overcome the stagnancy of the traffic metrics associated with a handful of the most popular keywords in your vertical. Don't Waste Money on Unqualified Traffic - It's equally important to ensure that in attempting to leverage broadl searched key phrases to grow traffic, you don't start advertising on irrelevant, costly keywords. For each keyword, we examined the first five pages of results across each of five major search engines. On average, each keyword generated a little more than 250 results. Overall, we examined more than 413,000 unique URLs (web addresses). We assigned each keyword a category and a country and then ranked them by the risk of their resulting URLs. In addition, using data from Hitwise, a search intelligence company, we conducted much deeper dives into specific keywords. Keywords were ranked in two ways: 1) the average risk of all results and 2) the maximum risk of the riskiest page of results. Overall, the average risk level of all results pages was just 1.7%. In other words, in a list of 250 results, • just over four were risky. However, when we averaged the most risky pages (the page from each keyword search that had the • most risky results), the average risk shot up to 10.0%. In other words, in a list of 250 results, just over 25 were risky. The categories with the worst maximum risk profile were lyrics keywords (26.3%) and phrases that • include the word “free” (21.3%). If a consumer landed at the riskiest search page for a typical lyrics search, one of four results would be risky. The categories with the worst average risk profile were also lyrics sites (5.1%) and “free” sites (7.3%). • The categories with the safest risk profile were health-related search terms and searches concerning • the recent economic crisis. The maximum risk on a single page of queries on the economy was 3.5% and only 0.5% risky across all results. Similarly, even the worst page for health queries had just 4.0% risky sites and just 0.4% risk overall. We used Hitwise to generate a detailed list of keyword variations for 12 search terms. As defined by • McAfee, the riskiest set of keyword variations was “screensavers” with a maximum risk of 59.1% and an average risk of 34.4%, substantially higher than the study averages of 10.0% and 1.7%. Surprisingly, searches using the keyword “Viagra,” a popular keyword that is a frequent “visitor” in our spam filters, yielded the fewest risky sites. Keywords popular in non-U.S. countries were significantly riskier than those popular in the United • States. 14 countries had keyword lists that exposed users to a higher maximum risk than average, including the Czech Republic (14.2%) and Brazil (12.1%). And 12 countries were overall riskier than the average, including Mexico (1.9%) and India (1.8%). These findings may prove to be anomalies, but if subsequent studies confirm them, this could be early evidence of a troubling new trend of scammers targeting non-U.S. victims. What Makes Certain Search Terms Risky? Why are certain keywords or search terms riskier than others? While it’s not always possible to understand the minds and motivations of today’s sophisticated hacker s , McAfee can provide some insight based on known techniques employed by cybercriminals. Hackers are most successful when they can attract a large number of victims. One way to target big crowds online is to track current events—everything from celebrity meltdowns and natural disasters to holidays and popular music. One key tool cybercriminals use to snare victims is to get them to download a computer file or program that comes with a malicious payload. With these two concepts in play, let’s take a look at one of our riskiest search terms: free music downloads. On average, 20.7% of results were risky (compared to just 1.7% of all search terms) and on one results page out of the 25 search engine pages we rated, we found a whopping 42.9% of results risky. As consumers continue to convert their music libraries to digital formats like MP3 files, they also struggle with the cost of buying music they may already own in cassette, LP record, or other formats. Caught between those two needs, many consumers have heard that the web can be a source for free Hackers are most successful when they can attract a large number of victims. One way to target big crowds online is to track current events—everything from celebrity meltdowns and natural disasters to holidays and popular music. 5 Report The Web’s Most Dangerous Search Terms music. If the consumer is already looking for music, then they already have the mindset of being willing to download something—and that makes the malware author’s work easier. A website’s subject matter or type of content can also affect its riskiness. Two such examples are lesser known pornographic and gambling sites that can be used to host malicious software such as exploits, dialer s , Trojan s , and other malwar e . This type of content can lead consumers down the dark alleys of the Internet, and consumers expose themselves to more risk when they attempt to search for these terms. When determining “market size” for their scams, cybercriminals may look at the total number of website links a search term yields. Googlebattle.com is a good tool for illustrating this. McAfee found “Brad Pitt” more dangerous to search for than “Hugh Jackman” (14.3% maximum risk to 9.1%). Similarly, Googlebattle produces 26.4 million hits for “Brad Pitt” and just 5.5 million for “Hugh Jackman.” It’s important to note that the number of website links is just one factor a cybercriminal might use when weighing whether to target a keyword. For example, Googlebattle finds Olympics soccer has more links than Olympic swimming, but for U.S. audiences in particular, “Michael Phelps” was a more popular— and riskier—search term. Similarly, spikes in news coverage can also drive even consistently popular keywords out of the “most risky zone.” For example, three popular female celebrities are Angelina Jolie (8.3% maximum risk) Oprah Winfrey (10%) and Beyonce Knowles (10%). But searches for Zuma Rossdale, the daughter of Gavin Rossdale and Gwen Stefani, can be as risky as 25%, suggesting that malicious or unscrupulous players do pay significant attention to news events. Study Methodology Each phrase and keyword was searched for in five major U.S.-based search engines—Google, Yahoo!, Live, AOL, and Ask. We looked at the first five pages of results for each keyword and counted the number of red and yellow rated sites on each page (as determined by McAfee SiteAdvisor ® ) and compared them to the total number of rated sites. We did not count sites for which we did not yet have a rating. We counted both sponsored and organic links and we weighted them equally. McAfee SECURE ™ sites that undergo daily vulnerability testing were counted as green-rated sites for the purposes of this study. We then ranked the riskiness of a particular search term in two ways. Average risk is the total number of red- and yellow-rated sites divided by the total number of red-, yellow-, and green-rated sites on the 25 search pages we examine. Maximum risk is the single page with the highest percentage of red- and yellow-rated sites. 6 Report The Web’s Most Dangerous Search Terms For example, a keyword which generated ten rated results per page would yield 250 total rated sites. The average risk would equal (red- plus yellow-rated sites / red- plus yellow- plus green-rated sites). Ten red- plus 15 yellow- and 225 green-rated sites would yield an average risk of 10% (25/250). If one page displayed two red- plus two yellow- and six green-rated sites, the maximum risk would equal 40% (4/10). McAfee SiteAdvisor rating methodology Our site safety opinions come from the McAfee SiteAdvisor site rating database. This database includes ratings for more than 20 million sites that together account for approximately 95 percent of the trafficked web. Website ratings are based on tests for the following security threats and concerns: Risky downloads • —Downloadable files that contain viruse s , spywar e , or adwar e or make unrelated changes to the downloading computer Browser exploits • —Also known as a driveby download, this type of malicious code enables viruses, keystroke logger s , or spyware to install on a consumer’s computer without consent and/or knowledge Email practices • —Registration forms and other sign-ups that result in high volume email, highly commercial email or both. We also test for difficultly unsubscribing. Phishin • g —Scam sites that try to trick visitors into believing the site is legitimate Excessive popups • —Sites that engage in aggressive popup behavior or display large numbers of pop ups Linking practices • —Sites that aggressively link to other red- or yellow-rated sites The vast majority of tests are conducted by test computers. In some cases, McAfee staff augments this automated testing with manual examinations. Red ratings are given to websites that fail one or more of these tests. Yellow ratings are given to sites that, in our opinion, merit caution before using. Green ratings are given to sites with very minor or no risks found. Sources of data This study examined the relative risk of searching for approximately 2,658 unique popular keywords and phrases across 413,368 unique URLs. In all cases, adult filters were on. Four variations of the term "facebook" were among the top 10 search terms during the year, accounting for 5.62% of US searches overall, up 27% year over year (YOY). The term "youtube" maintained its No. 2 spot in 2012, while "craigslist" moved up one spot to take the No. 3 spot. The search term "amazon" moved into the top 10 for the first time in 2012: Below, additional findings from Experian Hitwise. The 50 most popular search terms accounted for roughly 12% of all Internet searches in 2012, up 30% YOY. Click Here Among other findings related to the top 50 search terms: Search terms related to social networking sites dominated the results, accounting for 6.03% of the top 50 searches, up 44% YOY. Common search terms for Facebook (e.g., "facebook" and "facebook.com") accounted for combined 5.84% of all searches among the top 50 terms, an increase of 27% YOY. YouTube terms accounted for 1.67% of total searches, up 23% YOY. Google terms (including YouTube) accounted for 1.91% of total searches, up 20% YOY. Yahoo terms accounted for 0.79%, up 34% YOY. "Navigational searches continue to dominate the top search results as users continue to visit their favorite sites via search engines instead of directly entering a web address into their browsers URL bar," said Bill Tancer, general manager of global research for Experian Marketing Services. "Single-word searches grew 16% in 2012 as a result of continued reliance on search engine's suggested results. Other top 2012 searches reflected the ongoing infatuation with celebrities online." New Search Terms New terms that entered the top 50 search terms for 2012 were backpage, cool math games, fox news, pinterest, and pof (an acronym for Plenty of Fish, the top visited dating site in the US). Top-Visited Websites Facebook was the top-visited website for the third consecutive year, accounting for 79.1 billion total US visits in 2012. Google.com ranked second, with 78.5 billion visits, followed by YouTube (25.9 billion), Yahoo Mail (22.2 billion) and Yahoo (20.8 billion). The combination of Google properties accounted for 109.3 billion total US visits, while Facebook properties accounted for 79.1 billion and Yahoo properties accounted for 76.5 billion. The top 10 websites accounted for 276.3 billion total US visits overall, or 32% of all US Internet visits in 2012, up slightly from 2011 levels.
